Threshold hygiene for ledger alerts

Dashboard with colorful charts

Most financial auditing apps arrive with percentage-based variance rules that made sense for someone else’s chart of accounts. Left untouched, those rules generate a fog of alerts that teach reviewers to click dismiss.

Inventory before you invent

Export every active threshold with owner, last change date, and hit rate for the prior three closes. Anything untouched for two fiscal years deserves a retirement vote—not a silent keep.

Replace percentages with hypotheses

A useful signal states what wrongdoing or error it is trying to find. “Vendor concentration spike after new plant go-live” is a hypothesis. “Anything over 5% versus prior month” is a habit.

Document the kill

When you retire a rule, write one paragraph: why it existed, what replaced it, and who approved the change. Future you will thank present you when an auditor asks why the light went dark.
